Electrochemistry of materials research group (Elma)

Présentation générale des activités de recherche / Research activity

Electrochemical techniques are powerful and innovative approaches to fabricate and characterize functional materials with new properties. Fundamental electrochemical phenomena, such as electrodeposition processes, corrosion, ionic conduction at interfaces are studied in order to develop advanced materials for applications in the field of nanotechnology, energy and environment. For this, our group is gathering competences based on the control of both liquid and solid-state electrochemical techniques. One main aspect of our research is the electrochemical nanostructuration of materials. Modern electrochemical approaches are investigated for the fabrication of one and two-dimensional structures such as self- organized TiO2 nanotubes and Sn nanowires, highly-ordered alumina membranes, ZrO2 nanotubes, PEDOT-silicon nanowires, flower-like ZnO nanostructures, thin ionomers layers, nanocomposites materials. We study the mechanisms responsible for the formation of the nanostructures in order to control the electrochemical parameters leading to different morphologies and the related properties. The nanostructures have direct applications in the field of:

  • Energy storage and conversion: Li-ion microbattery anodes based on nanotubes and nanowires, ion-conducting hybrid membranes for electrochemical power sources, electrodeposited polymers;
  • Environment (enhanced photocatalytic properties of TiO2 nanotubes);
  • Corrosion of materials: microelectronic devices (credit card chips), biomedical (knee prosthesis).
